In 1825, Philippe Suchard (1797-1884), a master chocolate maker from Neuchatel, Switzerland, created a chocolate using only milk, cocoa beans and sugar. This chocolate became an overnight sensation and soon became known as “Swiss chocolate.”
In 1867, Suchard opened a factory in Bern, Switzerland and began mass production of his chocolate. By 1901, the Suchard company was the largest chocolate producer in Switzerland and had introduced the Milka brand.
The Milka brand quickly became known for its quality chocolate and unique Alpine packaging. In the early 1900s, Milka began using the now-famous Milka Cow to promote its chocolate.
The Milka Cow was first introduced in 1906 and has been a part of Milka’s branding ever since. Thecow is traditionally depicted as wearing a pink bow and is often seen in Milka’s advertising grazing in a Swiss meadow.
In 2001, Milka merged with Cadbury Schweiz to form Milka-Cadbury. In 2010, Kraft Foods acquired Cadbury, and Milka became part of Mondelez International.
Today, Milka remains one of the most popular chocolate brands in Europe and is available in more than 120 countries around the world. The Milka brand is best known for its Swiss chocolate, Alpine packaging and the Milka Cow.
